In short, the low-cal diet says that in order to diet successfully, then you have to eat fewer calories than you use.

Definition of a calorie?
A calorie is a measurement of the energy provided by food. The 'calorie' is the the amount of energy required to raise one cubic centimeter of water by one degree centigrade. If a food has more calories, then it will will give you a larger amount of energy when it is eaten.

Low calorie food types include brussels sprouts, capsicum pepper, apricot, steaks and burgers, and low-fat cheese.

1 lb Sage-flavored bulk pork

Sausage 2 tb Finely chopped onion

6 tb All-purpose flour

1 qt Milk

1/2 ts Poultry seasoning

1/2 ts Ground nutmeg

1/4 ts Salt

Dash Worcestershire sauce Dash hot pepper sauce Crumble sausage into a large saucepan; cook over medium-low heat. Add onion; cook and stir until transparent. Drain, discarding all but 2 tablespoons of drippings. Stir in flour; cook over medium-low heat about 6 minutes or until mixture bubbles and turns golden. Stir in milk. Add seasonings; cook, stirring, until thickened. Serve over biscuits or over chicken fried steak. Yield: 4 servings. SOURCE: "Taste of Home (Premiere Edition)
